Mind Your Manners

I learned at a very early age from my mother to show appreciation for the kindness of others. This lesson was passed down from my grandmother to my mother and then to me. It is something I am working every day to instill in my daughter.

The lesson: Gratitude. It is something we learn at an early age and it stays with us throughout our lives. Understanding its importance and expressing it makes us better people.

But in this day and age, with our busy lives, we sometimes forget about some of these timeless family values.

However, as fundraisers, we can NEVER forget. We need to always remember to express our gratitude.

Do you know what I do after I receive a gift, a favor or experience a random act of kindness?

I pull out my box of thank you notes! And – gasp – I handwrite a sincere, heartfelt message of thanks and explain how their generosity affects me or my family and in what capacity.

It isn’t a text. It isn’t a Facebook post. It isn’t a tweet. Or even an email. And while all these communication tools allow you to acknowledge the generosity of others, they are impersonal.

The moral of the story: even in this day and age of technology and instant communication, do not underestimate the power of a handwritten thank you note.

I mean, who doesn’t like getting mail that’s not a bill? I know I do! And your donors do too!

I’m a mother trying to pass along the values that have been passed down to me from generations of family members before me. I strive to teach my little girl to remember to thank those who are generous, kind and supportive. Shouldn’t we, as fundraisers, do the same? Shouldn’t we let our donors know how much we value their generosity and commitment?
