Are Your Communications Donor-friendly?

As a fundraiser, you know your donors are the heart and soul of what you do. But are you communicating with them in the best way possible? Here are some tips to help you understand the best strategies to communicate with your donors…

  1. Take a red pen and circle the number of times “You” (referring to the donor) and “We” (referring to your nonprofit) appear. The copy should always speak to the donor. If you have a lot more “we’s” than “you’s,” your copy is not donor-centric.
  2. Tailor copy to different segments. Speak to new donors differently than you speak to lapsed donors. And regular renewal donors should not receive the same copy that your loyal and leadership donors do.
  3. Survey your donors to find out why they support you and what matters most to them. Use that information to address what the donor cares about in future communications.
  4. If you have a two-page letter (front and back), try splitting the last sentence on the page. This will force the reader to continue onto the back of the letter.
